When a maintenance engineer finds that a sensor model is no longer available, the instinct is to search for the exact part number. Often the original is discontinued and the search stalls. The faster route is cross-referencing: capture the technical attributes that define the device and match them to a current alternative. This guide covers what to read from the nameplate and how to turn it into a replacement specification.
What defines interchangeability
A sensor is defined less by its brand than by the parameters below. Capture these before looking for a substitute:

A photo of the nameplate plus the mounting dimensions is usually enough for a specialist to propose a match.
Notes by sensor family
- Inductive proximity (e.g. Balluff BES 516): PNP vs NPN, flush vs non-flush, and sensing distance decide the match.
- Photoelectric: diffuse, retro-reflective or through-beam — the optical mode is not interchangeable.
- Temperature: Pt100 / thermocouple element vs transmitter. WIKA supplies the TR10 Pt100 and T15 / T32 transmitters; S+S Regeltechnik the 1101 duct sensor; Thermo Sensor the probe ranges.

How a cross-reference is built
- Record the original part number and capture a nameplate photo.
- List the attributes above, starting with measured variable and output.
- Match range and voltage, then process connection and protection rating.
- Confirm the electrical interface (PNP/NPN, sourcing/sinking, 4–20 mA).
- Validate the candidate on the bench or in a non-critical position before full rollout.
