The 24 V bus on a truck or mobile machine is one of the harshest supply environments there is: voltage sag during cranking, load-dump spikes, shared-ground noise from heavy loads. Troubleshooting a mobile DC/DC supply therefore starts with the vehicle electrical environment, not the unit itself.
A four-step routine
Step 1 — Reproduce the condition at the input. A static multimeter reading proves nothing. Recreate the failing condition — cranking, full-load lifting — and log the voltage at the supply’s input terminals. Whether the sag or spike exceeds the supply’s rated input range decides whether this is a wiring issue or a mis-specified unit.
Step 2 — Apply the thermal derating. Most mobile supplies must be derated at high ambient temperature. A unit mounted near the engine bay may deliver only seventy or eighty percent of its rating in summer — while the loads were specified at nameplate value. The result: “alarms when hot, fine when cold”. Measure and compare against the derating curve.
Step 3 — Use the diagnostics. Supplies with CAN diagnostics — such as the Deutronic DVCx3 DC/DC series or the diagnostic DBL1200 — report output current, temperature and fault codes directly. Three codes dominate: over-temperature, over-current and input under-voltage, pointing respectively at cooling, load and vehicle supply.
Step 4 — Check grounding and routing. A few extra milliohms on a high-current ground path translates into a full volt of drop under load. Torque every terminal, measure ground potential differences, and route signal wiring away from power runs so controller inputs are not fed supply ripple.

Selection notes
When replacing or adding a mobile supply, match four things: input voltage range against the vehicle system (12/24/48 V; wide-range types ride through cranking), output current with margin for the real load, ingress protection for the mounting location, and CAN diagnostics where remote monitoring is wanted.
